POSITION AVAILABLE:

 

MiraCosta College invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track faculty UMOJA Counselor position, beginning in July 2018, assigned to work in the General Counseling Department and reporting to the Dean of Counseling and Student Development. The UMOJA Counselor assists African American and other student populations in transitioning into and connecting with the campus community, enhancing cultural and educational experiences, and increasing persistence and retention rates to ultimately achieve their educational goals. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching counseling courses; leading workshops including weekly Porch Talks, orientations, and seminars; and assisting in developing and implementing necessary retention programs to meet program participant needs in support of the advancement of the vision, mission, and values of the MiraCosta Community College District.

 

BACKGROUND:

 

The General Counseling Department strives to empower students through a holistic counseling practice to make wise-choices, learn from mistakes, believe in themselves, and create success stories. We engage in equity-minded practices to provide a welcoming environment for all students and support each student uniquely. We believe in providing accurate and timely information. We prioritize students first in all of our professional interactions, decisions, and considerations. Our department currently consists of thirteen full-time faculty members committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion when providing services and teaching. Representative Duties:

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

1. Provide academic, career, and personal counseling (face to face and/or online) using culturally-responsive techniques and equitable practices for engaging students who are racially and ethnically diverse, specifically African American. (E)

 

2. Participate actively in departmental committees, subcommittees, and projects.

 

3. Keep abreast of changing degree, certificate, and transfer information in order to counsel students about the most current requirements. (E)

 

4. Lead group presentations including student-interest workshops, seminars, and weekly Porch Talks, orientations, group counseling, and other matriculation functions. (E)

 

5. Teach credit classes in college success and career/life planning and transfer success. (E)

 

6. Conduct counseling in non-traditional settings.

 

7. Exhibit proven cultural humility/proficiency skills when working with students from diverse backgrounds (e.g., first-generation, disproportionately impacted students, low-income, non-traditional college students).

 

8. Serve as a counseling faculty liaison for academic and career education departments.

 

9. Collaborate with colleagues, community partners, and local high schools in programs or initiatives that serve racially and ethnically diverse students.

 

10. Participate in ongoing professional development activities in the field of counseling and cultural humility/proficiency.

 

11. Participate in the district's and academic senate's participatory governance processes and committees.

 

12. Coordinate recruitment of Umoja students and development of programmatic activities in collaboration with the Student Equity Department. (E)

 

13. Engage in regional and statewide Umoja consortium Umoja activities. (E)

 

14. Work in collaboration with other full-time and associate faculty in coordinating and maintaining currency of curriculum that is culturally responsive to students' needs. (E)

 

15. Assist in the creation, review, development and evaluation of courses both online and on-ground, certificates, and programs in collaboration with other instructors as appropriate that is culturally responsive to students' needs. (E)

 

16. Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLOs). (E)

 

17. Participate in the tenure review process as described in the "Criteria for Evaluation" at http://www.miracosta.edu/administrative/hr/downloads/CriteriaForEvaluation.pdf.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

 

1. a Master's degree in counseling, career development, educational counseling, guidance counseling, counseling psychology, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR

 

2. a Master's degree in Education, Concentration: Counseling; Education: Counseling Option; Education: Counseling and Guidance Concentration; Education: Educational and Clinical Counseling; Education: Educational Counseling; Education: School Counseling; or Social Welfare (approved comparable degree majors at MiraCosta College); OR

 

3. a Bachelor's degree in any of the majors listed in (1) above AND a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license valid in California; OR

 

4. the equivalent. Applicants who do not possess the EXACT degree major(s) listed above must attach an equivalency narrative and supporting documentation at the time of application. Instructions can be found at http://www.miracosta.edu/administrative/hr/downloads/Equivalency_009.pdf; OR

 

5. a fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College Counselor Credential; AND

 

6. sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

 

1. At least two years of counseling experience (either full time or the equivalent to full time) in a counseling department at the community college level, within the last six years.

 

2. An understanding of the interconnectedness of socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and personal factors contributing to both the achievement of and the barriers to success for African American students and other populations.

 

3. Demonstrated experience in creating and implementing programs and services that serve racially and ethnically diverse students.

 

4. Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships between campus programs and community agencies.

 

5. Commitment to examine, reflect, and modify instructional, relational, classroom and counseling practices to more effectively engage and support disproportionately impacted student populations with a goal of closing equity gaps (see Student Equity website at http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/studentequity/index.html).

 

6. Ability to contribute to the mission of the college.

 

Licenses and Other Requirements:

 

Working Hours: WORKLOAD AND OTHER EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:

Annual on-duty days will be 195, spread over 12 months. The standard contractual work week is forty (40) hours, including twenty-five (25) contact hours, ten (10) preparation hours, and five (5) institutional service hours. The twenty-five (25) contact hours is defined to include any counseling activity in which counseling service is provided to a student or students, including instruction, workshops, individual or group counseling. The ten (10) preparation hours include course work preparation and counseling preparation (of which 5 hours must be on campus). The expectation is that thirty (30) hours will be on campus. Counselors assigned to teach classes are designated as classroom faculty for that portion of their workload, which is computed accordingly as classroom LHE and comes with a "flex" obligation of two (2.0) hours of preapproved professional development activities per one (1.0) classroom LHE (fall and spring). The person selected for this position will be assigned a Faculty Service Area (FSA) in General Counseling (Non-Classroom) and General Counseling (Classroom) and will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation. Adherence to all District policies and procedures is expected.

Because counselors have 195 on-duty days per year, their salary placement will be on the full-time faculty salary schedule plus a 1.108 time factor, reflecting the number of days beyond the standard 176-day faculty contract.
