The Director of Human Resources will support the learning and development of our 2,200 undergraduate students by working to build and maintain an engaged, high-performing, and people-centered culture among faculty and staff. The successful candidate for this position will generate enthusiasm, build partnerships, and create sustainable policies and organizational structures that support the work of a high-functioning educational community.

 

The College’s next Director of Human Resources should be a skilled practitioner, a collaborator, a team builder, and a leader who serves as an engaging human connection between Gustavus employees and the smart human resources systems, processes, and policies that support them. We seek employees who are committed to and will actively contribute to our efforts to celebrate cultural and intellectual richness and be resolute in advancing inclusion and equity. This senior leader will report to the Vice President for Mission, Strategy, and Innovation and directly supervise a team of three including a human resources business partner, a benefits specialist, and a human resources generalist.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Cabinet in developing an HR strategy that aligns with the mission, vision, values, goals, and programs of the College, and increases overall effectiveness of the College.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to ensure and promote workforce diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • In collaboration with others, ensure that the College’s organizational structure, policies, and procedures effectively facilitate the achievement of the Gustavus Acts Strategic Plan priorities.
  • Lead the HR team members on the development and implementation of HR policies, systems, and programs.
  • Develop recruiting and hiring programs and processes that attract, develop, and retain a strong and engaged workforce.
  • In collaboration with others, create a strategy for personal and professional development for all members of the Gustavus community.
  • Develop and implement compensation and benefits programs for employees that are competitive, equitable, cost effective, and responsive to employee needs.
  • Manage and coordinate the HR systems and procedures that require regulatory compliance (e.g., affirmative action, equal employment opportunity, ADA, leave claims, HR records, etc.)
  • Manage the HR budget and oversee the Benefits budget for the College.
  • Provide coaching and support to supervisors and employees.
  • Lead, manage, and develop the HR staff.
  • Participate in appropriate College committees, initiatives, and activities, including serving on the President’s Council for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Human resources certification also preferred (i.e. PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP)
  • Five-seven years of relevant HR leadership experience.
  • Successful portfolio of accomplishments in leading HR initiatives.
  • Maintain momentum for transformative change.
  • Successful experience assisting organizations in developing and implementing strategies and promote workforce inclusion, equity, and diversity.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and demonstrated abilities to work effectively with a wide range of groups and individuals.
  • Excellent organizational sense, a professional development orientation, and demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Skills related to use of technology, data analysis, and related presentation competencies.
  • Familiarity with current business practices, along with governmental regulations that are relevant to human resources at Gustavus Adolphus College.
  • Ability to work comfortably with a variety of organizational departments and groups.
